This has always been one of my favorite optical illusions. The tricky part about this cartoon, of course, was just drawing the figure. I had a picture of it in front of me as I drew it, so it's not like I was drawing it blindfolded -- and still I would make mistakes and have to start parts over. It's astonishing the kinds of "grooves" we can get ourselves into. Ask me to draw a person with bad posture and frumpy hair, and I can whip one out in mere seconds. Ask me to draw other things in the natural world, and I can usually stumble my way through it without too much pain. But ask me to draw something completely non-euclidean like this, and an hour later I'll still be trying to get it right.
