This cartoon was originally entitled Eileen in the Jungle. I drew it as a birthday present for a fellow student in my Physics 122 class at BYU in 1998. She was quite good at math, as implied in the cartoon.

Artistically, this cartoon is not one of my showcase pieces. In a cartoon such as this, where each panel differs very little from its neighbor, it is imperative that the characters' "look" does not change from panel to panel. I did a decent job at making the explorer consistent, but the poor native! His height, head shape, and posture all vary wildly in each panel. This is one of my known failings -- I have a hard time drawing the exact same thing twice. Luckily, nowadays I can just draw one character, scan it into the computer, and paste it as many times as I need. If I could do it all over again, I would have probably done that for this cartoon. But at this point, is it really worth it? I didn't think so either.

I spent a great deal of time studying foreign-language dictionaries in the Harold B. Lee Library to come up with all the translations for hello in this drawing. Starting at the first panel, they are: English, French, German, Italian, Macedonian, Polish, Arabic, Hebrew.
